Styria

The name of Styria is closely linked to three important manifestations of folk music. The diatonic hammered dulcimer, also known as the Styrian dulcimer, the diatonic button accordion, also known as the Styrian, and the Steirer or Steirische, a dance for couples from the Landler family with many figures.

Styrian musicians have been popular in Austria and beyond Austria's borders since the mid-19th century. In other words, the name Styria has become synonymous for rural "Landler" traditions.

Today, many influences that shape new developments in folk music emanate from Styria.
