Lower Austria

The various Quarters of Lower Austria state purvey a multifaceted image of regional music culture. Besides pieces characterised by Viennese society music, we also find Alpine songs and yodelling. Songs relating to religious practices such as pilgrimages or rogation processions, or singing to praise local saints are particularly prevalent in the Weinviertel and Waldviertel (Wine and Forest Quarters). In the Mostviertel (Must Quarter) wedding traditions play an important role. Songs relating to professions are typically encountered in the south of Vienna, the Industrieviertel (Industrial Quarter).

Folk songs from the 19th and 20th century are still popular with many. The diatonic button accordion is one of the major folk music instruments in the whole of the state. The aufhOHRchen Festival has been promoting current folk music trends since 1993; the festival takes place in a different Lower Austrian community each year.
