The March is originally from the field of military music where it was used to regulate marching troops. The development of marching music is thus closely linked to military music. In the middle ages, this was pipe and drum music, later horns, which were replaced by brass in the 19th century. Many French, German and Austrian composers wrote military music, and as a style it can be found in suites and divertimeni, operettas and operas. Marches are also found in wedding and funeral music, for processions and other parades.
They are mainly composed of three parts where the trio often includes a singable part or a waltz. The march as a dance developed into the "Schieberischen", a pushed two-step danced by couples.
